Why Do I Need an Attorney? I Can Use Google.

Owning your own business is exciting and rewarding work. As the boss of the company, you get to make all of the pertinent decisions within the business and any employees look to you for knowledge on how things work. But what happens when you run into a legal issue or you need legal advice?

While you can certainly Google how to handle a certain situation without an attorney, you are not always going to see accurate results. As much as we refer to Google when we need questions answered, the search engine is not always right. Beyond that, an attorney well-versed in business law will have the right expertise to handle the situation at hand.

In this article, we’re going to cover why an attorney is an integral part of owning and running a small business.

Attorneys Have The Necessary Expertise

In order for attorneys to practice law, they need to complete almost a full decade of relevant schooling before they can earn their license to practice law. As a result of that schooling, they are exposed to and well-versed in all aspects of the facet of law that they practice. So, while you may learn quick answers from a preliminary Google search, an attorney is more knowledgeable about the process by which to handle a business situation.

Google Is Not Always Right

Another benefit that practicing attorneys have on Google is that Google is not always going to show you the correct results. The way Google works is that the search engine’s algorithm searches for keywords in web content and filters through to only show you results from what you type into the search bar. While this may seem like an easy way to get the right information, there are a number of websites out there that use the right keywords but offer incorrect or inaccurate information.

Attorneys Are Better Equipped to Represent You in Court if Necessary

When you run a small business, you are not immune to potential legal issues that require a court date. If you have an employee who was treated unjustly or you are suing another business for using your products and calling them their own, an attorney is going to get you much better results in court than you could if you were representing yourself.  Also, business organizations are not allowed to represent themselves in court.

Along with that, you may find yourself in a situation where you unintentionally breached a contract or misfiled your taxes. In those cases, an attorney is the best option for getting those cases resolved as they are not emotionally tied to the situation.

Parting Thoughts

Google is certainly a great tool to use in a variety of situations. However, when it comes to legal situations, an attorney is the best option. Not only are they more knowledgeable about the law and how to navigate it, but they are also the most well-equipped option for physical court cases.

Regardless of the situation you are in, you can only benefit from having an attorney on retainer to ensure you do not fall into any legal trouble.
